Professional Background

Early Career

Skill Building

During my last two years as an undergraduate at the University of California, Santa Barbara, I worked as an Academic Advisor in the Sociology department, was a teaching assistant for a Film Studies course, and also worked for film director Andy Davis who owned a local production company and post-production facility in the Santa Barbara foothills. It was there that I began speed-reading materials for film and television; providing “coverage” (brief script synopses and development notes), and learning about writing for film and television, developing and packaging film projects with studio executives, and pre-production planning. It was my first exposure to the world of financing and packaging film projects, coordinating production schedules, and the skill of remaining fluid and flexible while ceding to the rigidity of time and budget constraints.

After graduation I moved to Los Angeles, where I worked in Higher Ed for a couple of years and then transitioned to working in film and media (with a break for grad school). In 2004 I moved to London to work at The Curtis Brown Agency. I spent four years in the UK, before returning to Los Angeles at the end of 2008, where I transitioned to working in higher education, as Executive Assistant to the Vice Chair / Head of Production, and Festival Coordinator at the UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television

Working in film and media gave me a grounding in communications, copy writing, and brand development; client relations and strategic partnerships; vendor relations and contract negotiation; budgeting and financial processes; regulations, compliance, and risk management; investors and stakeholder relations, and social psychology. It was were I honed my corporate communication skills and learned to leverage my emotional intelligence. While the stakes were often high, to be able to navigate that industry with calm immediacy and cool self-assurance, resulted in success as a project management and resulted in career advancement. This background has provided an invaluable framework for my career as an Executive Assistant and Event Management professional, for film production and event coordination embrace many of the same mechanisms within a similar approach and framework.

These dual tracks of working in both Higher Education and in the Media industry - which expounds the tenets of creativity, but is first and foremost a high pressure business environment - meant that I could step into my role of Event Coordinator with confidence, and with the ability to see the larger picture. Event Planners live in the moment, but also 12-18 months out (and longer), which mimics the rhythm of business of the film industry. You can be in production on a feature film today, while simultaneously ensuring that future projects are brought to fruition and ready to launch next, culling them from various phases of development and pre-production.
